South African singer and songwriter, Tyla Laura Seethal better known as Tyla delivers her new album “A*POP“.

The album houses fourteen tracks and features artist like Liquideep, Zara Larsson, MaWhoo and Babalwa.

Three years after her big break, and two years after her self-titled debut album that built on the mix of amapiano, pop, and R&B from “Water,” Tyla feels more sure of herself than ever. She’s toured the world, played Coachella, and performed with Future at the World Cup opening ceremony. With her second album, A*POP, the rising global star stakes her claim, making it clear she’s an African musician above everything else. “A*POP is literally me trying to extend the idea of what an African pop star looks like, what an African pop star sounds like,” she explains. “I think that, sometimes, when you’re from somewhere, you’re expected to look a way or sound a way.” She recalls seeing comments along the lines of, “Tyla’s not African enough.” “And I’m like, ‘What is African enough?'”

On A*POP, Tyla builds on her debut album’s foundation with her breathy vocals and playful sensuality. But where that first record reached out worldwide, here the singer represents her homeland, working with South African artists almost exclusively. (Zara Larsson, who Tyla previously worked with on Midnight Sun: Girls Trip, is the one exception on the Britney Spears-referencing “SHE DID IT AGAIN.”) She lands her next hit with the mesmerising “CHANEL,” begs a lover to come closer on the Rihanna-esque “THAT GIRL,” and reimagines a 2009 anthem from legendary South African house duo Liquideep on the pulsing “FAIRYTALE.”
